Cutting some sound holes
In prep for the Artisan Fair, I’ve been prepping some supplies to do some working demonstrations. one of the projects will be bracing a uke top. I went ahead and put holes in a half dozen tops or so .
it starts with at pilot hole on center… even though these are one piece tops, it’s pretty important to have a center line. The drill bit serves a couple or purposes, first to drill the hole, second to act as an axis for the sound hole cut-o-matic shown below.
After installing the cut-o-matic on the drill bit, I lightly scribe the arc in the top. the blade tends to follow the grain when it travels tangent to the grain. so you may see flat spots in places. adding pressure as you spin the top. you eventually cut through the top and remove the sound hole.
